Using Fundamental Data in Technical Analysis

Using Fundamental Data in Technical Analysis (Audio)
Contrary to the beliefs of many hard line technical analysts who rely solely upon the “holy six” market elements (high, low, open, close, volume, and open interest), Jim has found that certain fundamental data, such as earnings and economic releases, can provide an edge in market forecasting. Using numerous examples from the bond market, Jim shows you how to create an effective bond trading strategy which incorporates both fundamental data and technical analysis. He also explains why some fundamental data, such as inflation, is NOT useful in market projection. Jim also addresses the effects of commodity prices on bond yields, how the ratio of the equity market’s capitalization as a percentage of nominal gross domestic product affects price performance of the stock market, the role government regulation plays in determining inflation, how market performance affects mutual fund investors, the role politics play in setting interest rates, and measuring the stock and bond market from a total-return perspective.

Seasonality Is there a “holy grail” of price prediction? Traders have long been in pursuit of one, and while a handful of strategies, techniques, and methodologies have proven noteworthy, the search continues for the ultimate forecasting instrument—if one does indeed exist. The theory and methods of seasonality may well prove to be a step in the right direction to this goal. In this unique new book, a leading seasonal trading analyst examines seasonality in-depth, elucidating the concise principles, numerous advantages, and enormous potential that make it one of the most important—and effective—methods currently available for targeting futures price trends. Over the years, considerable attention has been paid to the effects of interest rates, money supply, earnings, inflation, and other key factors on stock and commodity prices. Yet, the immense impact of seasonal price tendencies has been either grossly underestimated or completely ignored. Often overlooked, but equally significant, seasonality is based on the assumption that seasonal influences cause biases in the movement of market prices. nner, and Yale Hirsch, among others, to create a pragmatic and highly functional analytical framework.

Robert Barnes

Robert M. Barnes, a trader, business analyst, and broker for more than twenty years, lives with his family in Savannah, Georgia. A prolific author, his books on quantitative trading methods and portfolio management include Trading Systems Analysis (McGraw Hill, 1997), Trading in Choppy Markets (Dow Jones Irwin, 1997), and High Impact Day Trading (Dow Jones Irwin, 1996). His articles have also appeared in Futures magazine and Stocks and Commodities. He has lectured at the New School in New York, and is currently consulting for various CTAs. Robert has developed many customized trading and portfolio management software programs for an impressive list of clients, including IBM, Merrill Lynch, Louis-Dreyfus and Morgan Stanley. Robert also uses his considerable background in statistics to model, forecast, and simulate investment, government, and industry operations. He has developed many new theories of price behavior, risk/reward statistics, derivatives and arbitrage strategies, forecasting functions, Monte Carlo simulations, buy/sell timing methods and forensic techniques including the Directional Relative Volatility Index and the Volume-Price method, which are covered in his presentation.

Timing is EverythingTiming is Everything: Three Powerful Methods for Matching Entry Strategy with Risk Posture (Audio)
In this session, Robert discusses three different timing methods: the Directional Relative Volatility Index, the Volume-Price method, and the Time-Price method. These three timing methods provide traders with an opportunity to match entry strategy with risk posture. The Directional Relative Volatility Index (DRV) is a simple but very powerful indicator which represents return (net price change over a given period) divided by risk (average price change magnitude). It is ideal for identifying short-term trading opportunities, especially in choppy markets. The DRV measures how much price energy is translated into a single direction, whether that direction is sideways (indicating no action), up, or down. The DRV allows traders to maximize profits while keeping losses low, or at least low relative to profits. It adapts well to changing market conditions, going to zero in choppy markets, +1 in strong uptrends, and –1 in heavily sinking markets. The DRV, however, can run into problems in choppy markets with low volatility or in very volatile markets exhibiting strong price movement in one direction. The Volume-Price method updates classical volume analysis to better suit today’s faster paced, real-time environment. It is a fascinating technique that analyzes each countertrend move as it happens to determine if a turning point has occurred or if the trend will continue. Robert shows you how volume drives price and why traders must ascertain that there is a strong volume in the current period to be certain of strong price movement in the following one. Significant and growing volume reflects a concerted and sustained effort by buyers or sellers to obtain or divest contracts. The trick is to recognize when volume is significant and growing. Robert shows you how to use the relationship between volume and price to make this determination. Most breakout trading methods follow every countertrend price move until it is confirmed by a secondary signal or the original trend is resumed. Moving average systems smooth out some of the noise from price movements, making trends easier to follow. The Time-Price method incorporates the best of both these approaches into a system that distinguishes meaningful breakouts from those that are meaningless at the beginning of the countertrend movement. This is accomplished by finding and filtering out special price patterns that do not depend exclusively upon the strength of the price movement. By codifying these mathematical relationships into easily recognizable patterns, Robert provides you with a way to integrate the power of advanced mathematics into your trading system — without having to go back to school!

Tom Aspray

Originally a biochemist, Tom Aspray started to use his computer and scientific skills to analyze the financial markets in the 1970s. His efforts were so successful that they led to a career shift, and in 1982 Tom became the director of research for a financial firm researching a wide variety of items traded worldwide. Tom did extensive system testing using early versions of CompuTrac. As a result of this research, Tom identified a series of technical studies that he feels work best in all types of markets. In 1985 Tom formed APM Asset Management Corp., which provides advice to individuals and institutions around the world. Many of the techniques he pioneered in the early 1980s are now used by professional analysts industry-wide. In addition, Tom trades real-time, mainly in cash foreign exchange markets—one of the most difficult markets to trade. Tom has recently joined Princeton Economic Institute, Ltd. (PEI) as a capital market analyst. PEI provides institutional consulting services worldwide and has offices in Sydney, Tokyo, London and Hong Kong.

Avoiding Vegematic Markets

Avoiding Vegematic Markets – Don’t Get Sliced and Diced by Choppy Markets (Audio)
Do the markets you trade ever seem to have no direction while other markets are moving sharply higher or lower? Does this lack of direction cause you to experience a succession of losing trades? Tom Aspray shows you how to avoid these choppy markets and reduce the number of whipsaw trades. He shares with you his new research on applying regression analysis to the directional movement index as a way to isolate trending from non-trending markets. We were particularly pleased that Tom chose TAG 19 as the platform from which to introduce this new work. Tom uses trading bands to confirm his identification of trending versus choppy markets, and he uses Regress-RSI to select low-risk entry and high-probability exit strategies. Tom provides you with specific formulas as well as a step-by-step procedure that can be utilized immediately to improve your trade selection and accuracy. In addition, Tom discusses the psychological requirements of short-term versus long-term trading so that you can determine which style is best for you.

Curtis Arnold is a veteran of the stocks and commodities markets. His first book, Your Personal Computer Can Make You Rich in Stocks and Commodities, sold over 50,000 copies and contained the actual code for twenty-five programs that would create and plot technical indicators. His next book, Timing the Market (1984), sold nearly 70,000 copies worldwide. Changing Times magazine chose Timing the Market as the best investment book of the year in 1992. In 1994, the book made the best-seller list in India. Curtis developed the Commitment of Traders Index, a tool that allows traders to spot imbalances in futures open interest among small, large, and commercial speculators. In 1987, Curtis’ research led him to quantify and classify classical chart patterns, then produce accurate statistics, rating each for its probabilities of success. This led Curtis to develop his PPS System (Pattern Probability Strategy), one of today’s more successful and popular trading systems. After tripling his personal account in 1988, Curtis began training a limited number of students in his methodology. In 1992, one of his students became the number-one-ranked CTA in the country. That same year, a first-year PPS student won the United States Investing Championship with a return of 216.1 percent. Supertraders Almanac then chose PPS as “Trading Methodology of the Year.”

The new trader should have no difficulty following this presentation. Concepts progress logically from the basic to the more complex. There are no abstract theories that the trader must accept on faith or complex formulas to intimidate the new practitioner. Step by step, Curtis proves that any trader can duplicate his personal trading success by approaching trading as a business. A trader must have a consistent approach and a long-term perspective and must adhere to the four basic tenets of trading: trade with the trend, cut losses short, let profits run, and use good money management. Curtis explains why most traders lose and why success depends upon long-term thinking. Curtis shows a simple way to define a trend and describes nine specific patterns that allow you to follow any trend with minimal risk. You will learn to recognize the most powerful pattern found on a chart and ways to avoid missing a major move. Curtis teaches you how and when to move your stop to break-even and how to combine two powerful exit systems to ensure that you never again give back your open profits. Curtis also discusses some of the additional considerations that allow a trader to adopt a more aggressive stance when appropriate, including basis relationships, options expiration, and first notice days. Finally, Curtis teaches you a proven money management system using a fixed fractional approach to boost your performance and reduce your longest string of losses.

Richard Arms

In his thirty years on Wall Street, Richard Arms, president of the Arms Companies, a division of Lakeview Securities, has changed the way analysts think about financial markets. In showing the relationship of volume to price movement, his Arms Index has become one of the most popular tools on Wall Street and appears on all the major stock quotations systems. The Arms Equivolume Charting Method, the first new charting system since point and figure charts were introduced in the 1930s, has been widely used by technicians for over a decade. Richard has written three landmark books on strategic market analysis: Profits in Volume, Volume Cycle in the Stock Market, and The Arms Index. He has written numerous articles for national publications including Barron’s and Pension and Investment Age. He publishes The Arms Letter, a daily advisory service for institutions, used by major mutual funds, banks, and money managers throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. He lectures frequently at meetings of market analysts and has made numerous television appearances, including “Wall Street Week” with Louis Rukeyser. In 1995, Richard received the prestigious MTA annual award for technicians who have made the most significant contribution(s) to the field of technical analysis, the first living technician ever to receive this distinction.

The Arms Index, Equivolume Charting, Ease of Movement, and Volume Adjusted Moving Averages

The Arms Index, Equivolume Charting, Ease of Movement, and Volume Adjusted Moving Averages (Audio)
Richard’s workshop emphasizes actual trading. He shows you how these tools combine to form a stand-alone trading system applicable to stocks, futures, and bonds. In this workshop, you will learn the concepts of Equivolume Charting, which gives volume and price equal weight in determining the anticipated direction of a move, allowing the investor to see not only what is happening but why. The vertical axis in Equivolume Charting still represents price, but the postings are depicted as boxes, the width of which represents volume. You will use the Ease of Movement Oscillator to numerically evaluate the boxes on the chart, taking into consideration the size and shape of each, the direction of price movement, and the magnitude of the move. The value allows us to compare the relative strengths of issues. You will also learn (from the original developer) the mechanics and practical applications of the Arms Index (short-term trading index), which determines the relationship between the ratio of advancing to declining issues and the ratio of advancing to declining volume. The Arms Index measures the internal dynamics of the market, ascertaining direction and strength of volume. Low Arms Index numbers indicate proportionately greater activity (demand) for an advancing issue — very bullish. Low numbers indicate greater activity around a declining market — bearish. As a moving average, the Arms Index indicates an overbought or oversold condition. The Arms Index appears in major daily and weekly business publications and on CNBC and most regional TV channels.

Stop and Make MoneyStop and Make Money: How To Profit in the Stock Market Using Volume and Stop Orders (Book)
Acclaimed stock market analyst Richard Arms presents a practical, hands-on explanation of how he trades stocks. Using the methods that he has pioneered, along with other technical tools, Arms will show how to identify stocks that are beginning to gather momentum; establish precise entry and exit points; and manage the trade to maximize profits. Geared for active stock traders, the method generally calls for holding stocks for a few days to two or three weeks. But unlike similar approaches, it does not require constant monitoring of the market, special software, or extensive analysis. The method is simple, efficient, and easy-to-learn. A trader can put in his/her orders with a broker and simply walk away. With the right approach, Arms emphasizes that stock trading can be fun and exciting. And he shows how to make the less enjoyable part of trading — money management — simple and automatic. Arms has successfully traded stocks for over 40 years, and this book digests his methods into a simple and practical approach that traders can expect to generate annual returns of about 30%.

The Arms Index The Arms Index (Trin Index): An Introduction to Volume Analysis (Book)
Just reprinted. Finally, it’s updated and back in print! Get an in depth look at how volume – not time – governs market price changes. Describes the Arms’ short-term trading index (TRIN), a measure of the relative strength of the volume in relation to advancing stocks against that of declines. A true trading gem.

The Arms index has changed the way technical analysts perceive the market. In discovering that stock price changes are a function of volume, Arms has made a significant impact on investors’ attitudes toward the stock market.

In abandoning time as a stock market measurement and using volume instead, Arms reveals an entirely new approach to technical analysis. He explains the information on intraday uses of the index…arithmetic moving averages…crossovers…weighted moving averages…and more.

Profits in Volume Profits in Volume: Equivolume Charting (Book)
This method places emphasis on the trading range and trading volume – which are considered to be the two primary factors involved in technical analysis. They give an accurate appraisal of the supply/demand factors that influence a stock. Once you know this critical factor – you can determine if a stock is moving with ease or difficulty.

The land mark book on Equivolume Charting that described the methodology and its application for the first time-is available again. Presented in its original form, this is the classic that tied volume and price together, allowing investors to analyze not only the way in which a stock is moving, but the underlying pressures involved in that movement. And uniting volume and price into a single entry provides the investor with a unique view, unrealized in a traditional bar chart.

This innovative technique was the outgrowth of Dick Arms’ development of the widely known Arms Index, often referred to as the short term trading index(TRIN).. The Arms Index work led him to the realization of the importance of volume as an analysis tool. And this index is so important to investors that it is recapped daily in The Wall Street Journal, and weekly in Barrons’s. It is also recalculated and displayed every minute on the CNBC ticker tape.
